Dying languages
A recent report in the New York Times suggested that nearly fifty percent of the nearly 7000 languages spoken in the world today are in danger of extinction. 231 aboriginal languages spoken in Australia, all are currently under threat of extinction.
Researchers are working hard to record what they can of these but it’s a race against time, especially as these are estimated to be only three known speakers of Magati Ke( a language from the Northern Territory), and the same number of Yawuru speakers( who come from Western Australia). Researchers are often faced with unusual difficulties when trying to record languages.
For example, linguists trying to create a dictionary of Ayapaneco, a native Mexican language, discovered that the last two speakers refused to speak to one another.
