Read the following passage and mark the letter  $A, B,  C$  or  $D$  on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to  each of the questions from  $1$ to  $10.$
Researchers in the field of psychology have found that one of the best way to make an important decision, such as choosing a university to attend or business to invest in, involves the utilization of a decision worksheet. Psychologists who study optimization compare the actual decisions made by people to theretical ideal decisions to see how similar they are. Proponents of the worksheet procedure believe that it will yield optimal, that is, the best decisions. Although there are several variations on the exact format that worksheets cam take, they are all similar in their essential aspects.
Worksheets require defining the problem in a clear and concise way and then listing all possible solutions to the problem. Next, the pertinent considerations that all possible solutions to the problem. Next, the pertinent considerations that will be affected by each decision are listed, and the relative importance of each consideration or consequence is determined. Each consideration is assigned a numerical value to reflect its relative importance. A decision is mathematically calculated by adding these values together. The alternative with the highest number of points emerges as the best decision.
Since most important problems are multifaceted, there are several alternatives to choose from, each with unique advantages and disadvantages. One of the benefits of a pencil and paper decision-making procedure is that it permits people to deal with more variables than their minds can generally comprehend and remember. On the average, people can keep about seven ideas in their minds at once. A worksheet can be especially useful when the decision involves a large number of variables with complex relationships. A realistic example for many college students is the question "What will I do after graduation?" A graduate might seek a position that offers specialized training, pursue an advanced degree, or travel abroad for a year.
A decision-making worksheet begins with a succinct statement of the problem that will also help to narrow it. It is important to be clear about the distinction between long-range and immediate goals because long-range goals often involve a different decision than short-range ones. Focusing on long-range goals, a graduating student might revise the question above to "What will I do after graduation that will lead to a successful career?"

Read the following passage and mark the letter  $A, B,  C$  or  $D$  on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to  each of the questions from  $1$ to  $10.$
It's a sound you will probably never hear, a sickened tree sending out a distress signal. But a group of scientists has heard the cries, and they think some insects also hear the trees and are drawn to them like vulture to a dying animal. Researcher with the U.S Department of Agriculture's Forest Service fastened sensors to the bark of drought-stricken trees clearly heard distress calls. According to one of the scientists, most parched trees transmit their plight in the $50$-to  $50$-kilohezt6 range. (The unaided human ear can detect no more than  $20$  kilohezt). Red oak, maple, white pine, and birch all make slightly different sounds in the form of vibrations at the surface of the wood.
The scientists think that the vibrations are created when the water columns inside tubes that run the length of the tree break, a result of too little water following through them. These fractured columns send out distinctive vibration patterns. Because some insects communicate at ultrasonic frequencies, they may pick up the trees' vibration and attack the weakened trees. Researchers are now running tests with potted trees that have been deprived of water to see if the sound is what attracts the insects. "Water-stressed trees also smell differently from other trees, and they experience thermal changes, so insects could be responding to something other than sound", one scientist said.

The principle of use and disuse states that those parts of organisms'  bodies that are used grow larger. Those parts that are not tend to wither away. It is an observed fact that when you exercise particular muscles, they grow. Those that are never used diminish. By examining a man's body, we can  tell which muscle he uses and which he does not. We may even be able guess his profession or his recreation. Enthusiasts of the "body-building" cult make use of the principle of use and disuse to "buil" their bodies, almost like a piece of sculpture, into whatever unnatural shape is demanded by fashion in this peculiar minority culture. Muscles are not the only parts of the body that respond to use in this kind of way. Walk barefoot and you acquire harder skin on your soles. It is easy to tell a farmer from a bank teller by looking at their hands alone. The famer's hands are horny, hardened by long exposure to rough work. The teller's hands are relatively soft. The principle of you and disuse enables animals to come better at the job of surviving in their world, progressively better during their lifetime as a result of living in that world. Humans, through direct exposure to sunlight, or lack of it, develop a skin color which equips them better to survive in the particular local conditions. Too much sunlight is dangerous. Enthusiastic sunbathers with very fair skins are susceptible to skin cancer. Too little sunlight, on the other hand, leads to vitamin-D deficiency and rickets. The brown pigment melanin which is synthesized under the influence of sunlight, makes a screen to protect the underlying tissues from the harmful effects of futher sunlight. If a suntanned person moves to a less sunny climate, the melanin disappears, and the body is able to benefit what little sun there is. This can be represented as an instance of the priciple of use and disuse: skin goes brown when it is "used", and fades to white when it is not.

Read the following passage and mark the letter  $A, B,  C$  or  $D$  on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to  each of the questions from  $1$ to  $10.$
Line    Before the mid-nineteenth century, people in the United States ate most foods only in season. Drying, smoking, and salting could preserve meat for a short time, but the availability of fresh meat, like that of fresh milk, was very limited; there was no way to prevent spoilage. But in  $1810$ a French inventor named Nicolas Appert developed the cooking-and-sealing process of canning. And in
$5$    $1850's$  an American named Gail Borden developed a means of condensing and preserving milk. Canned goods and condensed milk became more common during  $1860's$, but supplies remained low because cans had to made by hand. By  $1880$, however, inventors had fashioned stamping and soldering machines that mass-produced cans from tinplate. Suddenly all kinds of food could be preserved and bought at all times of the year.
$10$   Other trends and inventions had also helped make it possible for Americans to vary their daily diets. Growing urban populations created demand that encouraged fruit and vegetable farmers to raise more produce. Railroad refrigerator cars enable growrs and meat packers to ship perishables great distances and to preserve them for longer periods. Thus, by the  $1890's$, northern city dwellers could enjoy southern and western strawberries, grapes, and tomatoes,
$15$   previous available for a month at most, for up to six months of the year. In addition, increased use of iceboxes enable families to store perishables. An easy means of producing ice commercially had been invented in the  $1870's$, and by  $1900$  the nation had more than two thousand commercial ice plants, most of which made home deliveries. The icebox became a fixture in most homes and remained so until the mechanized refrigerator replaced it in the  $1920's$  and  $1930's$.
$20$  Almost everyone now had a more diversified diet. Some people continuted to eat mainly foods that were heavy in starches or carbohydrates, and not everyone could afford meat. Nevertheless, many families could take advantage of previously unavailable fruits, vegetables, and dairy products to achieve more varied fare.

Read the following passage and mark the letter  $A, B,  C$  or  $D$  on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to  each of the questions from  $1$ to  $10.$

Line  The time when humans crossed the Arctic land bridge from Siberia to Alaska seems remote to us today, but actually represents a late stage in prehistory of humans, an era when polished stone implements and bows and arrows were already being used  and dogs bad already been domesticated.
$5$    When these early migrants arrived in North America, they found woods and plains dominated by three types of American mammoths. Those elephants were distinguished from today's elephants mainly by their thick, shaggy coats and their huge, upward-curving tusks. They had arrived on the continent hundreds of thousands of years before their human followers. The wooly mammoth in the North, the Columbian mammoth in middle North America, and the imperial mammoth of the South, together with their distant cousins the mastodons, dominated the land. Here, as in the Old World, there is evidence that humans hunted these elephants,
$10$   as shown by numerous spear points found with mammoth remains.
Then, at the end of the Ice Age, when the last glaciers had retreated, there was a relatively sudden and widespread extinction of elephants. In the New World, both mammoths and mastodons disappeared. In the Old World, only Indian and African elephants survived.
$15$    Why did the huge, seemingly successful mammoths disappear? Were humans connected with their extinction? But the problem, of course, is one of melting. How can a giant iceberg be towed across the sea without melting? The answer could lie in enclosing the floating ice in iceberg be cylindrical container made of a high strength synthetic fabric. if the iceberg were nudge into the fabric container, which is opened at both ends, then the ends could be sealed and the sea water pumped out. After that it could be towed down and the synthetic cocoon would  act a holding tank for the water. Read the following passage and mark the letter  $A, B,  C$  or  $D$  on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to  each of the questions from  $1$ to  $10.$
How a man uses money - makes it, saves it, and spends it - is perhaps one of the best tests of practical wisdom. Although money ought by no means to be regarded as a  chief end of man's life, neither is it a trifling matter, to be held in philosophic contempt, representing as it does to so large an extent, the means of physical comfort and social well-being. Indeed, some of the finest qualities of human nature are intimately related to the right use of money; such as generosity, honesty, justice, and self - sacrifice; as well as the practical virtues of economy and providence. On the other hand, there are their counterparts of avarice, fraud, injustice, and selfishness, as displayed by the inordinate lovers of gain; and abuse the means entrusted to them. "So that", as it wisely observed by Henry Taylor in his thoughtful "Notes from Life", "a right measure and manner in getting, saving, spending, giving, taking, lending, borrowing, and bequeathing, would almost argue a perfect man".
Comfort in worldly circumstances is a condition which every man is justified in striving to attain by all worthy means. It secures that physical satisfaction, which is necessary for the culture of the better part of his nature; and enables him to provide for those of his own household. Nor ought the duty to be any the less indifferent to us, that the respect which our fellow men entertain for us in no slight degree depends upon the manner in which we exercise the opportunities which present themselves for our honorable advancement in life. The very effort required to be made to succeed in life with this object, is of itself an education; stimulating a man's sense of self-respect, bringing out his practical quailities, and disciplining him in the exercise of patience, perseverance, and such like virues. The provident and careful man must necessarily be a thoughtful man, for he lives mot merely for the present, but with provident forecast makes arrangements for the future. He must also be a temperate man, and exercise the virtues of self-denial, than which nothing is so much caculated to give strength to the character. John Sterling says truly, that "the worst education which teaches self denial is better than the best which traches everything else, and not that." The Romans rightly employed the same word (virtus) to desighnate courage, whch is in a physical sense what the other is in moral; the highest wirtue of all being victory over ourselves.

$1.$ What is the main idea of his passage?

$C.$ The most important thing in life is physical pleasure
$D.$ Money can only provide physical pleasure

$C.$ That learing to manage money effectively entails learning a number of other valuable skills
$D.$ Only intelligent people can earn money

$8.$ Why must the "provident and careful man" be a thoughtful man?
$A.$ Because he has earned a great deal of money
$B.$ Because he is familiar with the works of Henry Taylor
$C.$ Because he gives most of his money to charity
$D.$ Because he must always be planning for the future

$9.$ The author brings up the Roman word for courage to illustrate________

Read the following passage and mark the letter  $A, B,  C$  or  $D$  on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to  each of the questions from  $1$ to  $10.$
Scientists have developed a new bionic computer chip that can be mated with human cells to combat disease. The tiny device, smaller and thinner than a strand of hair, combines a healthy human cell with an electronic circuitry chip. Doctors can control the activity of the cell by controlling the chip with a computer.
It has long been established that cell membranes become permeable when exposed to electrical impulse. Researchers have conducterd genetic research for years with a trial-and -error process of bombarding cells with electricity in an attempt to introduce foreign subtances such as new drug treatments or genetic material. They were unable to apply a particular level of voltage for a particular purpose. With the new invention, the computer sends electrical impulses to the chip which triggers the cell's membrane pores to open and activate the cell in order to correct diseased tissues. It permits physicians to open a cell's pores with control.
Researchers hope that eventually they will be able to develop more advanced chips whereby they can choose a particular voltage to activate particular tissues, whether they be muscle, bone, brain, or others.     Collecting coins can be a good investment bit it requires the study of popularity, availability, and granding techniques. Some coins are more desirable than others, their popularity being affected by the artist's talent, the subject of the design, the material from which the coin is made, and the time period when the coin was created. Availability is just as critical. Providing the coin is otherwise interesting or pleasing to the eye, the number of coins mindted and available on the market seems to have a direct relationship to the popularity.
The ability to grade coins is perhaps the most important requirement of a collector. A coin that is popular and scarce, which would normally make it valuable, may be worth much less or nothing at all if it has a low grade. Grading is standardized, and one can buy books and take courses on how to do it.
Grades are given letter designations as well as numbers. The letter represent general levels of the grade, while the numbers are more detailed. For example, there are  $11$  number grades within the letter grade for a mint state coin. A mint state coin is uncirculated, which means it has never been used in commerce. It is the condition that it left the mint, the place where a coin is created. The mint state letter designation is MS, and the number range from  $60$  through  $70.$ An absolutely pefect coin is  $MS-70$. It takes much training and a good eye to tell the difference between coins in this range. The things one considers include whether the coin has contact mark, which are marks obtained when coins bounce against each other in a coin bag; hairlines, which are marks appearing on the face of the coin from the minting process; luster, which is the natural coloration; and eye appeal. For example, an  $MS-70$  is said to have no contact marks, no hairlines, very attractive and fully orginal luster, and poor eye appeal.
Below the mint state coin, the letter designation and number have the same meaning. That is, there are generally no numbers within the range of letters. But there are categories:
*Coin that are About Uncirculated: Very Choice About Uncirculated, known as  $AU-58$; Choice About Uncirculated, known as  $AU-55$; and About Uncirculated, known as  $AU-50$.
*Coin that are Fine: Choice Extremely Fine, known as  $EF-45$; Extremely Fine, known as  $EF-40$; Choice very Fine, known as  $VF-30$; Very Fine, known as  $VF-20$; and Fine, known as  $AG-3.$
*Coin that are Good: Very Good, known as  $VG-8$; Good, known as  $G-4$; and About Good, known as  $AG-3$.
Thus, a circulated coin can have a number designation between  $3$  and  $58$, with only the numbers shown above available. That is, one cannot have a coin with a grade of  $6$, for example. It is either  $G-4$  or  $VG-8$. It is possible for a coin labeled  $G-4$  or even  $G-3$  to be extremely valuable, but general it will be a coin that is almost unvailable in higher grades. Books and publications monitor the coin market regularly, just like the stock market is monitored, and ther described a coin's type, date, and grade, assigning a price to every one unless that grade would have no value.
In general, coin collectors loathe cleaned coins, so artificial cleaning by adding any chemical will detract greatly from a coin's value. A true coin collector will say the dirt in the creases is a positive attribute and much preferable to a cleaned coin.

Scientist have discovered the bones of what may be the largest meat-eating dinosaur ever to walk the earth. The discovery was made by a team of researchers from Argentina and North America in Patagonia, a desert on the eastern slopes of the Andes in South America. Besides the interesting fact that the dinosaur was huge and horrifying, it is even more astounding that the bones of a number of the dinosaurs were found together. This discovery challenges the prior theory that the biggest meat-eaters lived as loners and instead indicates that they may have lived and hunted in packs. The Tyrannosaurus Rex lived in North America and was believed to hunt and live alone.
The newly discovered meat-eater appears to be related to the Giganotosaurus family, being as closely related to it as a fox would be to a dog. It is actually not of the same family at all the Tyrannosaurus Rex, being as diffirent from it as a cat is from a dog.

Read a following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to  indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from  $1$  to  $11$.
MUSICAL TALENT
Among all the abilities with which an individual may be endowed, musical talent appears earliest in life. Very young children can exhibit musical precocity for different reasons. Some develop exceptional skill as a result of a well - designed instructional regime, such as the Suzuki method for the violin. Some have a good fortune to be born into musical family in a household filled with music. In a number of intersting cases, musical talent is part of an otherwise disabling condition such as autism or mental retardation. A musically gifted child has an inborn talent, however, the extent to which the talent is expressed publicly will depend upon the environment in which the chlid lives.
Musically gifted children master at an early age the principal elements of music, including pitch and rhythm. Pitch - or - melody - is more central culteres, for examplem, in Eastern societies that make use of tiny quarter - tone interval. Rhythm, sounds produced at certain auditory frequencies and grouped according to a prescribed system, is emphasized in sub - Saharan Africa, where the rhythmic ratios can be very complex
All children have some aptitude for making music. During infancy, normal children sing as well as babble, and they can produce individual sounds and sounds pattern. Infants as young as two months can match their mother's songs in pitch, loudness, and melodic shape, and infants at four months can match rhythmic structure as well. Infants are especially predisposed to acquire these core aspects of music, and they can also engage in sound play that clearly exhibits creativity.
Individual differences begin to merge in young children as they learn to sing. Some children can match segments of a song by the age of two or three. Many others can only approximate pitch at this age and may still have difficulty in producing accurate melodies by the age of five or six. However, by the time they reach school age, most children in any culture have a schema of what a song should be like ang can produce a reasonably accurate imitation of the songs commonly heard in their environment.
The early appearance of superior musical ability in some children providence that musical talent may be separate and unique form of intelligence. There are numerous tales of young artist who have a remarkable "ear" or extraordinary memory for music and a natural understanding of musical structure. In many of these cases, the child is average in every other way but displays an exceptional ability in music. Even the most gifted child, however, takes about ten year to achieve the levels of performance or composition that would constitue mastery of the musical sphere.
Every generation in music history has it famous prodigies - individuals with exceptional musical powers that emerge at a young age. In the eighteenth century, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart  began coposing and performing at the age of six. As a child, Mozart could play piano like a adult. He had perfect ptch, and at the age of nine he was also a master of the art of modulation - transition from one key to another - which became one of the hallmarks of his style. By the age of eleven, he had composed three symphonies and  $30$  other major works. Mozart's well - developed talent was preserved into adulthood.
Unusual musical ability is a regular characteristic of certain anomalies such as autism. In one case, an autistic girl was able to "Happy Birthday" in the style of various composer, including Mozart, Beethoven, Verdi, and Schubert. When the girl was three, her mother called her by playing incomplete melodies, which the child would complete with the appropriate tone in the proper octave. For the autistic child, music may be the primary mode of communication, and the child may cling to music because it represent as a haven as a world that is largely confusing and frightening.

Read a following passage and mark the letter  $A,  B,  C$ or  $D$  on your answer sheet to  indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from  $1$  to $9$.
There is a common expression in the English language referring to a blue moon. When people say that something happens "only once in a blue moon",they mean that it happens only very rarely, once in a great while. This expression has been aruond for at least a century and a half; there are line references to this expression that date from the second half of the nineteenth century.
The expression "a blue moon"  has come to refer to the second full moon occurring in any given calendar month. A secon full moon is not called a blue moon because it is particularly blue or is any different in hue from the first full moon of the month. Instead, it is called a blue moon because it is so rare. The moon needs a little more than  $29$  days, every month will have at least moon. Because every month except February has more than 29 days, every month will have at least one full moon (except February, which will have a full moon unless there is a full moon at the end og January and another full moon at the very beginning of March). It is on the occasion when a given calendar month has a second full moon that a blue moon occurs. This does not happen very often, only three or four times in a decade.
The blue moons of today are called blue moons because of their rarity and not because of their color, however, the expression "blue moon" may have come into existence in reference to unusual circumstances in which the moon actually appeared blue. Certain natural phenomena of gigantic proportions can actually change the appearance of the moon from Earth. The eruption of the Krakatau volcano in $1883$ left dust particles in the atmosphere, which clouded the sun and gave the moon a bluish tint. This particular occurrence of the blue moon may have given rise to the expression that we use today. Another example occured more than a century later.
